The Condition: Cat-Claw Damage Across the Set

The chair backs showed numerous small claw marks, lifted fibers, and more concentrated areas of surface damage. Because the scratching appeared across all eight chairs, treating only one conspicuous mark would not have returned the group to a coordinated appearance.

Restoring an Entire Matching Set

A multi-chair project has a different visual requirement from an isolated repair. Each chair needs to work on its own, but the color, sheen, and surface appearance must also read consistently when the chairs are viewed together around the table.

The restoration therefore addressed all eight chairs as one coordinated set. The goal was not to erase every sign of use or make unsupported claims of perfection; it was to substantially correct the visible scratch damage and restore a clean, consistent black appearance.

Addressing the Cat-Claw Scratches

The scratched surfaces were prepared and refined as required for their condition. Raised and visibly damaged areas were corrected, then the black finish was restored so the affected areas blended with the surrounding surfaces.

This project was a surface restoration. The chairs were not reupholstered, and the leather was not described or treated as though it had been replaced.

Black Color and Finish Restoration

Black furniture still requires careful finish work. Variations in depth of color, sheen, or surface texture can make one repaired chair stand apart from the others. Restoring the black finish across the set required attention to how the chairs looked both individually and together under the room's light.

Protective Finish

A protective top coating was applied after the color restoration. This final layer helps protect the restored color and surface during normal use. It does not make the chairs scratch-proof and does not guarantee protection from future cat-claw damage.

All eight chairs were completed. The visible cat-scratch damage was substantially corrected, the black appearance was restored, and the chairs once again read as one consistent set. The protective finish completed the surface restoration.

Repair vs. Replacement

Visible scratching does not always mean leather furniture needs complete reupholstery or replacement. When the condition is suitable for surface restoration, damaged areas can often be refined and refinished while retaining the existing upholstery. Deep structural damage, torn leather, failed seams, or severely compromised material may require a different approach. These chairs were restored according to their actual surface condition.
